For more than three decades, Meridian has been designing, manufacturing and installing yacht hydraulic systems. Supplying systems to the top end of the market where performance, reliability and redundancy are of the utmost importance.

Today, the new breed of sophisticated offshore cruising and racing yachts present a significant challenge. Many are wholly dependent on their hydraulics for their rig and sail handling, manoeuvring and anchoring. Meridian offers a new approach.

SYSTEM DESIGN AND CONSULTANCY

PIPE WORK INSTALLATION

  • On-site installation of the pipe work together with the commissioning of the complete hydraulic system give a “turnkey” project.

  • DC powered pump units from basic to ultra sophisticated, with installed powers ranging from 0.5 to over 40 kW and with the option of integrated or stand alone valve manifolds.

SY HAMILTON II 80kW HYDRAULIC POWER UNIT

  • Central Hydraulic Power Units are able to supply the hydraulic output for the largest sailing yachts.
  • Modular design optimised for installation into the given location. Aspects such as the angle of heel, the ease of maintenance and fault-finding are important design considerations.
  • Efficient power unit design helps to ensure cool and reliable operation.
  • High redundancy is assured by the use of multiple independent pump units supplying a central isolation manifold with integral logic.
  • An optional offline cooling and filtration system facilitates efficient oil cooling and filtration.
  • The offline system can also be configured to assist with service related work. The oil can then be removed or pumped back into the reservoir easily and efficiently with the required standards of cleanliness assured.

 Hydraulic Valve Manifolds

  • Programmable load-sensing ‘smart valves’ allow precise, load-independent control of highly loaded services. These valves enable the flow and pressure to be regulated for each and every service individually. This facilitates the operation of more than one service simultaneously without interference from the other.
  • IntegratedCPORM modules allow the controlled actuation or release of highly loaded cylinder powered services in a safe and predictable fashion. These valves allow sail trimming to be performed with ease and great precision.

System Redundancy

  • Every effort is made to engineer the hydraulic system in such a way that a ‘single failure’ will not bring the whole system down. Specially designed manifolds enable a defective service or damaged section of pipe work to be isolated. This enables the remainder of the system to retain some operational capability. This is an invaluable feature for any yacht venturing far from a safe haven as it installs great confidence in the capabilities of the system, as well as facilitating easy maintenance.
  • These redundant features are also important for yachts participating in regatta’s enabling many difficulties to be overcome without having to withdraw from the race.

SY Corsta V

USD 1 million contract for the design, manufacture and installation of the winch, rig, dagger-board and steering hydraulic systems for the 42m sailing vessel Corsta V.

 

The contract included the supply and installation of all the stainless steel pipe work; the rig cylinders; the steering system components as well as the actuators to lift the dagger-board.

SY Wally B

 

USD 0.5 million contract for the design, manufacture and installation of the new hydraulic system for the 33m sailing vessel Wally B. A “high performance” hydraulic system featuring “controlled powering on and release” for all highly-loaded cylinder-powered services. A “highly redundant” system with multiple independent pump units. The “branch type” pipe work being routed via manifolds which allow services and/or sections of the pipe work to be isolated in the event of some failure or fault. The system was installed and commissioned in France in 2002.

SY Alexia

 

USD 0.3 million contract for the design, manufacture and installation of the new hydraulic system for the 35m sailing vessel Alexia, based in Palma Mallorca. A “high performance” hydraulic system featuring “controlled powering on and release” for all highly-loaded cylinder-powered services. A “highly redundant” system with multiple independent pump units. The “branch type” pipe work being routed via manifolds which allow services and/or sections of the pipe work to be isolated in the event of some failure or fault. The system was installed and commissioned in Palma in 2007

SY Hamilton II

 

USD 0.7 million contract for the design, manufacture and installation of the new hydraulic system for the 36m sailing vessel Hamilton II based in Palma Mallorca. A “high performance” hydraulic system featuring “controlled powering on and release” for all highly-loaded cylinder-powered services. A “highly redundant” system with multiple independent pump units. The “branch type” pipe work being routed via manifolds which allow services and/or sections of the pipe work to be isolated in the event of some failure or fault. The system was installed and commissioned Palma in June 2009.

 

 

SY Velsheda – J Class Yacht

 

Meridian designed and manufactured the “Ultra-High” Performance hydraulic system for the 35m J Class Yacht Velsheda. The DC powered pump units draw 1 800 Amps at full load! The highly redundant system features a central isolation manifold and multiple pump units. The electrical control system has a modem to enable assistance to be provided remotely. The system was installed and commissioned in the United Kingdom in 2003. Over the past 10 years it has proved to be capable of delivering Race Winning performance as well as exceptional reliability.

SY Nariida

Meridian supplied the special hydraulic valves to facilitate the “controlled powering on and release” for all highly-loaded cylinder-powered services. Two “high-powered” DC pump units facilitate easy sail handling and trimming for cruising, obviating the need to start the main diesel engine driven pump unit.

Morelli Melvin Catamaran

Meridian designed, manufactured and installed the “Ultra- High” Performance hydraulic system for the 27m Morelli Melvin Catamaran SY Tien Tang. The sophisticated hydraulic control system allows multi-speed service operation…i.e. The speed of all the winches and cylinder powered service can be easily set from the touch screen. The highly redundant system features a “four outlet” central isolation manifold with four DC powered pumps and four PTO driven pumps providing the necessary hydraulic output!. The electrical control system has a modem to enable assistance to be provided remotely. The system was installed in Cape Town and commissioned in the United States in 2010.
